Meet the Teacher: Clare Sandley

In our preschool class we have a strong emphasis on learning through play, as we believe this is the best way for young children to learn. We place the children at the heart of all we do, following their interests with the child-led approach called ‘In the Moment Planning’. The children are eager to learn in our stimulating indoor and outdoor environments, which are tailored with open-ended activities and resources to suit the developmental needs of the individual children. Children are encouraged to be independent and develop a love for learning. They are able to make their own choices, follow their own interests, guide their learning and access resources freely. Our highly skilled and nurturing team use the children’s discovery time to interact with the children and respond to their needs and interests in the moment, with a knowledge of the age related expectations and how to extend their learning further. We understand that every child is different and adapt our interactions and learning to suit the children as individuals.
The structure of the preschool day includes long periods of uninterrupted play, so that the children can become engrossed in their learning and ideas. We are taken on so many adventures by the children each day! The children also engage with adult-initiated activities at key parts of the day. These include Squiggle Whilst you Wiggle (a gross motor exercise), Dough Disco (fine motor) and phonics (we follow the scheme ‘Little Wandle’).
We share our learning via Tapestry in the form of weekly updates and WOW moments. We encourage parents/carers to contribute to their child’s learning journal regularly. This is a great way for the children to share their experiences and learning with their teachers and friends whilst at preschool.
